5 Beaufort
Series of Cyanotypies, 40x30cm, 2026
5 Beaufort is a series of cyanotypes created in direct interaction with a river in Vienna.
For these works, sheets of paper coated with a light-sensitive cyanotype emulsion were partially immersed in flowing water while being exposed to sunlight at the same time.
Water acts as the central agent in the process. Its movement alters the exposure and generates structures reminiscent of topographical formations. The abstract image surfaces evoke associations with landscapes without depicting any specific place.
The work draws on the tradition of cameraless photography and expands it through a natural, dynamic process. Rather than a camera, it is the interplay of water, light, and time that determines the formation of the image. The river, and thus the water itself, becomes both a photographic tool and a co-author of the images.
